Subject: [DiGRA UK] Panel on gamergate at DiGRA2015

Interested in your proposals!

The hated panel: what is to be learnt from Gamergate?

The Gamergate controversy has put the academic study of video games under the spotlight. Game scholars, and DiGRA in particular, have been repeatedly accused of having a hidden agenda. 'Feminism' has been used as a bad word by many of the accusers. The humanities in general, and the idea of studying games and their players, have been under threat. At the same time, a multitude of different voices have overlapped proposing different perspectives. While some have argued that actually it's about ethics in games journalism, others have proposed that 'gamers', as a category, is about to disappear in any case, as a new and much more varied market audience is emerging.

This panel invites scholars to reflect on what is to be learnt from Gamergate for the academic study of video games. The main objective of the panel is not necessarily to decide who is on the right side in the debate. Rather, it attempts to multiply the possible interpretations of what has been said, and what has not yet been said, on one of the most hated series of events in video game culture.
