Hello all,
Just wanted to send out a quick message to let you know that just over two
weeks remain to submit an abstract for the one-day symposium *Playing Dead* at
the University of York (17 May 2018). Booking for the symposium will open
in March 2018.
It is the aim of this free one-day symposium to explore the intersections
that exist between death, culture and play. Play is used in a board sense
to mean leisure activities more generally and, as such, not only
encapsulates the playing of (non-)digital games, but also the consumption
of cinema, literature, comics, etc. Alongside a keynote address from
Professor Christopher Partridge (Lancaster University) abstracts are sought
from individuals wishing to present a twenty-minute paper.
Themes might include, but are not limited to, the following:
- death and the popular imagination
- the presentation of death in literature and cinema
- explorations of death and gaming
- horror and the Gothics interactions with death
- the dead and the undead
- dark tourism
- presentation of the corpse in popular culture
- memorialisation, digital culture, and media
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be supplied, along with a
biography of up to 200 words to matt.coward at york.ac.uk by the 28 February
2018.
Best wishes,
Matt
