Hello everyone, at this year’s DiGRA we’ve organised a workshop entitled:

Between Media Mix and Franchising Theory: Thinking Across and between the Theoretical Worlds of Transmedia Production

To be held: 6th August at 1-3.30pm in Zonshin 311

The object is to explore the connections and deviations between the concept of transmedia storytelling and franchise theory as it has developed in the West by figures such as Henry Jenkins, Jan-Noel Thon and Jonathan Gray, with the more culturally specific and specialised Japanese term the ‘media mix’, explored by Eiji Ōtsuka, Marc Steinberg, Anne Allison and Mizuko Ito amongst many others.

The workshop provides an ideal opportunity to interrogate and reflect upon the nature of the conference’s theme, hopefully setting the stage for debates and collaborations going forward and creating channels of discourse between an internationally diverse array scholars.

On the panel and kicking things off with short position papers we have Studio Ghibli expert and anime scholar Rayna Denison (University of East Anglia), whose Anime: A Critical Introduction is never far from student reading lists; Marc Steinberg (Concordia University) author of Anime’s Media Mix, still one of the key works on Media Mix in English; Akiko Sugawa-Shimada (Yokohama International University), who has written extensively on the Japanese context with a particular focus on female spectatorship and Shojo; Bryan Hikari Hartzheim (Waseda University) who has a foot in the realm of the Japanese media mix and franchise theory thanks to his work on japan and his recent edited publication The Franchise Era. We may even be joined via video by a special top-secret guest, an American academic legend of transmedia storytelling and fan studies. These stalwarts of the field will be joined by some early career researchers.

The speakers will then lead small-group discussions with attendees to collect ideas and perspectives, ultimately to create the ground-work for a future special issue journal developing the ideas of the workshop further and contributing to international debates on the issue.

We want to see as many people in the audience as possible to make the debates as far reaching and diverse as they can be. So, if you are at all interested in this topic of discussion please do join us for what is shaping up to be a highly stimulating and memorable workshop (and a bona fide cure for jetlag*).

Please contact the organisers with any questions or if you are interested in the future journal publication:
