Hi all,

We are hosting a one-day workshop at the University of Leicester on the theme of Games as Education in the United Kingdom. This represents a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary discussion of best practices and context-specific challenges as well as collaborative generation of shared resources. More details can be found below, and anyone who is interested in attending can register with me.

Best,

Alison

Workshop on Games as Education in the United Kingdom
Digital games have rapidly become a popular teaching area, and have at the same time become tools for education in a range of disciplines through game-based learning. The rise of games as and for education raises important challenges and opportunities related to teaching practice, innovations in assessment, available and needed resources for teaching, and game-based curricula.

The Games as Education in the United Kingdom Workshop, held in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Leicester, will open a dialogue between those using digital games for learning and assessment as well as digital game studies instructors across the United Kingdom. Through collaborative discussion and workshopping of best practices related to teaching with games, this workshop will be used to generate a portfolio of innovative teaching and assessment methods for game-based learning and a report containing recommendations on how these approaches could be used in a range of disciplines. Speakers include participants using innovative game-based teaching and learning techniques across the Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts, Science, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology as well as those teaching within Game Studies and Design.

The precursors for this event are three workshops related to the teaching of game studies at international conferences in the field in recent years (at the Digital Games Research Association Annual Conference in Germany in 2015 and the United States in 2014, and the Foundations of Digital Games Annual Conference in 2014). These sessions with international scholars highlighted the value of sharing the challenges and best practices for teaching digital game studies across diverse faculties, ranging from Engineering to Art and Design to Communications and Culture. The Games as Education in the UK workshop will complement these meetings and the documentation they produced in two ways:

1) To draw together UK-based instructors in order to provide a sense of the nuance and special considerations of this national context for teaching (with) games.
2) To bring together both game studies instructors and those seeking to integrate game-based learning within a range of disciplines to share broader best practices related to teaching, learning, and assessment with digital games.
The workshop will be held at the University of Leicester, Bankfield House Seminar Room, on Monday, May 16, 2016 from 10-4. Lunch and refreshments will be served, and the event is free. Spaces are limited so please register by emailing Alison Harvey at ah463 at le.ac.uk<mailto:ah463 at le.ac.uk>
