The hated panel: what is to be learnt from Gamergate?

The Gamergate controversy has put the academic study of video games under
the spotlight. Game scholars, and DiGRA in particular, have been repeatedly
accused of having a hidden agenda. ‘Feminism’ has been used as a bad word
by many of the accusers. The humanities in general, and the idea of
studying games and their players, have been under threat. At the same time,
a multitude of different voices have overlapped proposing different
perspectives. While some have argued that actually it’s about ethics in
games journalism, others have proposed that ‘gamers’, as a category, is
about to disappear in any case, as a new and much more varied market
audience is emerging.

This panel invites scholars to reflect on what is to be learnt from
Gamergate for the academic study of video games. The main objective of the
panel is not necessarily to decide who is on the right side in the debate.
Rather, it attempts to multiply the possible interpretations of what has
been said, and what has not yet been said, on one of the most hated series
of events in video game culture.

If you would like to participate, please send a description of your
contribution and a short biography (max 300 words). The panel will be
proposed to DiGRA 2015, to take place in Lüneburg, Germany on May 14-17th.
Please send your proposal only if you intend to participate at the
conference. Also, there is a plan to expand the panel into a curated issue
on a peer reviewed journal. Please think about this possibility, and if you
would like to be considered for that issue as well.

Please send your proposals by January 16th. A choice will be made in the
following days and the final application will be sent to DiGRA by January
22nd.
