*Job specification*
The department of Design, Production and Management researches and
educates the wide field of design. The research group Use Anticipation
in Product Design focuses herein on supporting designers in anticipating
use within product design processes in order to improve user – product
interaction. This aim is pursued by means of the development of new
design approaches and tools. The developed design supports particularly
focus on eliciting and sharing knowledge of product use by
(multi-disciplinary) design teams as well as the exchange of this
knowledge between designers and stakeholders, notably end-users. To this
purpose the developed approaches and tools are derived from
methodologies as scenario based product design, user involvement and
participatory design. Techniques as workshops, gaming and virtual
reality are frequently part of these design supports.
In our team we have a vacancy for an assistant professor who is
specialised in User Centred Design. In particular, we expect that he/she
is specialised in Interaction Design as well as Scenario Based Design.
Furthermore the candidate should have strong passion for and experience
in techniques to actively involve end-users in the product development
process, in particular in Virtual Reality and gaming techniques. Main
field of application will be intelligent consumer products. Due to the
composition of our team, we have a preference for a person having an
engineering background, in particular Industrial Design Engineering or
Interaction Design.
*Teaching:*The new assistant professor will take his/her part in the
teaching tasks of our group. At start, the following combination of
teaching tasks is foreseen: Interface design classes as part of the
modules on Ergonomics and Human-Product Relations, student-tutoring in
design projects and coordinator of the user-centred design project in
the bachelor, co-lecturer of the MSc module Scenario Based Product
Design, guiding BSc-final projects and MSc-final projects and
potentially (re)development of educational modules. If the candidate is
not qualified for teaching at universities yet, we will provide a
program to get this qualification within 2 years (University Teaching
Qualification, UTQ).
*Research*: We look for an independent researcher who is able to
identify the academic questions in practical applications and vice
versa, to translate academic research results into design engineering
practice. A strong academic background in Design Research is however a
prerequisite. He/she is able to attract external funding (2^nd /3^rd
money stream) for junior researchers (PDEng, PhD and PD positions).
He/she will be the daily supervisor of these junior researchers.
Furthermore, he/she will be able to publish papers in international
refereed journals and he/she can also coach junior researchers in doing so.
*General:*The candidate has excellent communicative skills to ensure
involvement of both colleagues and external stakeholders (e.g.
end-users) in research projects as well as is willing to keep close
contacts with design practice, industry and knowledge institutes on
recent developments. An extensive network and/or work experience in
design practice/industry is an advantage.
*Start:*November 1^st 2014
*Your Profile*
* PhD in Industrial Design Engineering, or related disciple with a
strong affiliation to User Centred Design and Interaction Design
* Experience in, or affinity with, the application of Virtual Reality
and gaming techniques for active stakeholder involvement
* Highly motivated to contribute to the field of Design Research
* Extensive network or work experience in design practice or industry
(advantage)
* Good publication record
* Proven capability in attracting external research money
* Good teaching skills, willingness to take the UTQ
* Good coaching skills (BSc, MSc and PhD students)
* Team player, also in multidisciplinary teams
* Excellent communication skills (Dutch and English)
