Dear all,
The Center for Advanced Gaming and Simulation (AGS) and the Dutch chapter of DIGRA organize four times a year a meeting for the Dutch game researchers. We meet at the Faculty Club Helios in Utrecht. The meetings normally consist of two lectures, followed by some drinks for further discussions. The meetings will be held in English.
The next meeting is scheduled on Friday, March 14, 15.00-18.00 hrs. This time though the program is a bit different. In close cooperation with SAGANET, we will organize a workshop about virtual worlds and online games, with special attention to differences and similarities between the research fields of digital gaming and simulation and gaming.
When it comes to three-dimensional and persistent virtual environments, the interactions among users within these rich world-like spaces have proven to induce some sort of alternate reality. Within such an alternate reality, a tension between simulation and fantasy comes into play. Similarly, two different game-related research disciplines seem to form a tenuous relationship as well. Sparked by the two tensions, this workshop aims to investigate the links between virtual world/online game research and the research disciplines of digital gaming and simulation and gaming. Being a workshop, the attendants are asked to work together in small groups, studying and discussing a text from one of the research disciplines. Subsequently, in a plenary session, similarities and differences between the two disciplines, as well as their relations to virtual world/online game research, are discussed.
The program is as follows:
15:00 Welcome with coffee and tea
15:15 Plenary - start of the workshop
15:30 Subgroup work - reading & reflecting
16:30 Plenary - discussion of different subgroups
17:15 Drinks
The final meeting before the summer will be held on 30 may 2008, 15.00-18.00 uur.
